Robot Credentialing

Robot credentialing is the process by which an autonomous system is verified and authorized to perform a defined scope of tasks within a facility, modeled on how hospitals already credential human staff.

Hospitals don't let a new hire operate independently on day one — they verify qualifications, define a scope of practice, and grant privileges through an independent credentialing process, separate from the hiring department itself. Robot credentialing applies the same discipline to autonomous systems: a defined process for verifying that a robot is fit to perform specific tasks, in specific areas, before it's granted the ability to do so.

How it differs from vendor certification

A vendor's own certification confirms a robot meets that manufacturer's engineering and safety standards. Robot credentialing is the hospital-side step that comes after: confirming the robot is authorized for this facility's specific tasks and zones, independent of the vendor's own sign-off. A robot can be fully vendor-certified and still lack institutional credentialing for a given hospital's environment.

Why it matters in healthcare

Credentialing bodies for human staff are deliberately independent of any single employer — that independence is what makes the credential meaningful and revocable. Autonomous systems don't yet have an equivalent independent credentialing structure; today, the vendor that builds a robot is also the sole authority over what it's permitted to do. Robot credentialing closes that gap by giving the hospital, not just the manufacturer, a formal role in defining and revoking scope.

A useful analogy

This mirrors how a hospital credentials a visiting physician or a locum tenens provider — verifying qualifications and granting a defined, revocable scope of practice at that specific institution, regardless of where the provider trained or who else has certified them elsewhere.
