Autonomous System Authorization

Autonomous system authorization is the broader, non-healthcare-specific term for the process of granting an autonomous system — physical or software-based — permission to act within defined constraints, based on identity, context, and policy.

This is the general term underlying more specific concepts like robot authorization layer and physical autonomous fleet governance. It applies wherever an autonomous system needs institutional permission to act, not just in hospitals or with physical robots.

How it differs from physical autonomous fleet governance

Autonomous system authorization is the umbrella concept — it applies as much to software agents and AI systems as to physical robots, and across any industry, not just healthcare. Physical autonomous fleet governance is the specific, healthcare-relevant application of this broader concept to physical robots and AMRs operating inside a hospital facility.

Why it matters in healthcare

Healthcare is likely to face this authorization problem twice — once for physical autonomous systems like robots, and separately for autonomous AI agents operating in clinical and administrative workflows. The underlying pattern is the same in both cases: an institution needs a way to define, in real time, what an autonomous system is allowed to do, and to revoke or adjust that authorization as context changes. Understanding the general concept clarifies why a hospital will likely need parallel governance structures for both physical and software-based autonomy, not just one or the other.
